Six Essential Items for your Home Gym

During the recent pandemic, many people found their favorite gym closed or that it just made more sense to stay safe and work out at home. As with many COVID-driven behaviors, the drive to equip home gyms caused an equipment shortage and drove up prices.

With things beginning to return to a more normal setting, many people have found that they like the convenience and simplicity of doing workouts at home. They enjoy not having the hassle of commuting to a facility, waiting on crowded equipment, and having the ability to set their own schedule.

During the past year, companies like Peloton have done remarkably well supplying expensive, high-end equipment to a growing market, but what if you do not have $2,000 - $3,000 to plunk down on home exercise equipment? Here are six essentials that will get you started for less than $200.

  • Yoga or Exercise Pad - This is a comfort must-have for doing floor-based exercises and stretches,

  • Foam Roller - Self-myofascial massage using a foam roller is a great way to warm up and cool down.

  • Dumbbells or Kettleballs - One pair will get you started. Choose a weight that will be challenging but will allow for up to 20 reps.

  • Stability (Swiss) Ball - These are handy for many stretching, core, and stability exercises. Also can serve as a chair in a pinch.

  • Exercise Bands - Mix and match various tensile strengths to meet your requirements.

  • An online trainer and app - Here is where you will get your personalized workouts, coaching, accountability, and inspiration. Be sure to check out VirtaFitness.com.

After the essentials you will soon want to add the following:

  • Water bottle - Make sure to stay hydrated during and after exercise.

  • Towel - See above.

  • Mirror - Needed to maintain great form. Remember the Five Kinetic Checkpoints (Head, shoulders, hips, knees, and toes) and keep them aligned during exercise.

  • Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) - A great way to track your effort and monitor safety.
